Purple Rain turns 31 today despite the fact that Prince still looks like he’s 25.
With a $7 million budget, the film managed to gross over $60 million domestically catapulting it into cult status. This would be the only feature film starring Prince which he did not direct, which was probably a good thing, as those of you who’ve seen Graffiti Bridge can surely attest to.
Purple Rain has the honor of being the last film to ever receive an Oscar for Best Original Song Score for a feature film. It also managed to garner a Grammy for Best Album of Instrumental Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special as well as an Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture for Prince.
Despite the film receiving relatively positive reviews, Purple Rain still managed to collect a host of other “awards.” It was nominated for two Razzies, one for Worst New Star for Apollonia Kotero and one for Worst Original Song for “Sex Shooter.”
Unfortunately they have yet to release a 30th Anniversary remaster of the film, but you can still celebrate with the 20th Anniversary Special Edition. So why not dust off your copy and re-purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka!
